Welcome to the Weald Branch of the Kent Beekeepers Association!
Although we are a branch that has been established for a number of years you will find us progressive, helpful and extremely friendly. Our membership is a 50:50 split male/female ranging in age from 11 years up to !!!years with knowledge and experience to match. I guarantee you will be made welcome and you will not feel out of place.
We are here to help new beekeepers of any age, learn the art and skill of beekeeping as well as continue the knowledge of the more experienced beekeeper. This hobby is fascinating and enjoyable but once hooked it has a tendency to reel you in, so warn your partner or better still, get them involved as well.
We run introductory sessions for potential beekeepers and we meet every Wednesday at Frittenden to inspect and maintain the club's apiary. Here you will be taught how to identify what is taking place inside the hives and learn the basic skills of beekeeping. You will also learn throughout the year:-
- Swarm control
- Swarm collecting
- Shown hive and frame construction
- key measurements and spacings for an efficient hive operation
We are currently running a Queen rearing course which new members are finding fascinating.
The third Saturday of every month we hold a more structured meeting. In the winter we have guest speakers who will talk about bee related subjects and in the summer we have apiary visits around the county. We also have a Honey Show, this year it will be held at Tractorfest in Biddenden. No year would be complete without the summer BBQ and Christmas lunch, both of which are well supported.
So, if you think you may be interested in beekeeping, give myself or one of my committee members a call, we will be happy to talk to you.
See you soon,
Chairman, Weald Branch
